Pre-Purchase Examination

Buying a new horse is a big decision, and you want to be certain you are getting what you expect.  Asking us to perform a vetting on a potential new horse relieves those anxieties about underlying medical problems.  If you wish to book a vetting, please speak to the office on 01942 886174.

Five Stage Vetting

The vetting process is divided into five stages:

Static Examination

A full examination of the horse at rest, including conformation, skin, eyes and teeth.

Trot Up

The vet will now watch the horse move, looking for any lameness, and any abnormal limb movements.  They may also perfom flexion tests on the horse’s legs.

Strenuous Exercise

The horse wll be exercised with a rider, during which time the vet will assess any respiratory problems and fitness.

Recovery

This is to make sure the horse recovers quickly and fully from hard exercise.

Trot Up

A final trot up to ensure that no lameness problems have been caused by the hard exercise.

Two Stage Vetting

This is a limited examintion comprising only the first two of the above.  We normally carry this out only if the horse is unbroken, so cannot be ridden for strenuous exercise.
